This years May Jubilee was a high-spirited tasting event punctuated by quite a number of club wines receiving high recognition for their quality. A total of 67 wines were entered by 17 home winemakers of which 11 or 16% received gold awards, 20 or 30% received silver awards, and 25 or 37% received bronze awards. One wine received a double gold, which was a 1999 Cabernet Franc from Amador entered by the FatCat Vintners. A double gold award means that all three judges agreed that the wine should receive a gold award.

The following Best of show awards were given in 5 categories.

Best of Sparkling was awarded to Fritzi and John Benbow for a 1999 blend of Chardonnay, Orange Muscat, and French Colombard.
Best of White was awarded to Linda and Jay Page for a 2000 Chardonnay.
Best of Red was awarded to Helen and Dave Dart for their 2000 Syrah. This is an especially impressive feat as this was their first wine entered into a competition and as you may recall from Darrell Corti’s tasting of the red wines, it was a wine made from grapes grown by fellow club member Jay Leone and dutifully hand massaged by Helen and Dave.
Best of Fruit was awarded to Judy Pinegar for, what else, her 2000 Olallieberry wine.
Best of Dessert was awarded to Darla and Vern Wolff for their 1994 Ruby Cabernet port.

The Best of Shows were then pitted against one another to determine which wine would be chosen as Best of Show. And the winner was - Judy Pinegar for her wonderful Olallieberry wine.

I want to thank all who participated as judges, clerks, and cellar rats. We had a new judge at each table and I hope we can keep on this tradition of teaching through experience. I feel we have a wealth of talent in terms of winemaking ability and judging expertise. Just look at the awards that Barbara and Bob Leidigh received and at the awards received by first time entrants.
